Three Reasons You Should Consider Buying a Rain Water Tank

With a changing climate, and the unpredictable weather patterns that come with it, people all around the world have been forced to rethink how they approach sustainable living. Infrequent droughts and mandatory water rationing have become increasingly common throughout Australia, mirroring the added value Australians are placing on one of our most precious resources: fresh drinking water. As such, the case for investing in clean rain water tanks is stronger than it has ever been and no longer only relevant to those living in rural communities. Here are the three main reasons you should consider a rain water tank:

1. It saves you money in the long run

A significant amount of money can be saved in the long term no matter what style of water tank you initially decide to invest in and install, be it underground, steel or some other. Rain water collecting water tanks can be used for a host of reasons, many of which involve substituting your freely collected water for the water you'd otherwise be billed for. If you connect a garden hose, you can use it in place of expensive sprinkler systems to water your lawn or garden. If you set it up so that it's connected to your washing machines, toilets or other in-home features, you bring down your overall water expenses drastically. Some town councils also offer valuable cash-back rebate plans as incentives for locals that install rain water tanks.

2. It's good for the environment and future generations

Dwindling municipal water supplies and consequent water shortages are already common throughout the country. This is coupled with an ever-expanding population and rising water prices. As such, the next generation will have to be extremely cautious with their water consumption, a significant fact given that bush fires are also becoming more and more common as temperatures around the world rise due to climate change. The extent of their problems can be mitigated now by storing and using as much free water as possible. Collecting rain water also reduces the effects of storm water runoff which has direct and damaging effects on water habitats, such as creeks, and the creatures that live in them.

3. Your health and safety benefit too

Harvested rain water is untainted by added chemicals or the metallic taste of tap water. Having the option to drink your own rain water gives you more freedom of choice regarding what you and your family drink, though you'll still want to have it filtered as other pollutants can still affect the rain as it falls. If you live in an area prone to bush fires, a rain water tank can also grant you the peace of mind of knowing you have a water supply to fall back on if the need ever arises. Some areas may even require that you build a water tank for this or other reasons.

Generally, the initial cost of purchasing and installing tanks like colourbond water tanks is balanced out by the many benefits that come with owning them. The relief they can bring to your wallet, the environment and your health and safety is more than worth it.
